In the Image of Romulus

This may be the final drawing of Romulus.  Very small changes were made, but when making even the slightest of changes, one must understand that it affects the rest of the drawing.  This in turn may require more changes within the drawing then just a simple line here or there.  When I moved the head closer to the vertical, the neck became a little too long, so I ended up having to raise the head a little as well.

The next step will be to make a small oil sketch using the completed drawing.  I will use the computer to print out the correct size needed and transfer the drawing to the canvas.

Romulus

From the Studio of Julie Janzen

Feb. 17, 2010

Today’s blog will describe the approach I used to develop the drawing of Romulus.  The objective was to create a horse, for a logo, to represent the breed, for registration papers.

This drawing began with the study sketches I had done of an Iberian breed horse, Romulus.  After creating the studies of Romulus, the client and I discussed the direction of the final drawing.  They wanted the drawing to represent a horse that was further along in his training, but was still a representation of Romulus and the Iberian breed.

The challenge was to create a horse from the existing photos of Romulus.  These photos came from a video of Romulus; which are not of the best quality and photos I took of him riderless.  None of these photos are exactly what we wanted the final sketch to look like; so I studied multiple sources along with the photos taken to create this final sketch.

A few more subtle changes are needed for this drawing to be complete as well as adding a few more values to help define some more shapes within the horse.
